Give a dollar, get a data story
The team at the Data Stories podcast is trying something new. After many years of financial support from our generous sponsors, the podcast is moving to a crowdfunding model, where the show will be funded by listeners alone.
For those of you unfamiliar with the podcast, on Data Stories we interview people who work in data visualization and with data in general, featuring a balance between academics, practitioners, designers, statisticians, and journalists. We keep an eye on what’s cutting-edge and innovative in the data visualization landscape.
If you are a listener and have enjoyed Data Stories so far, now you can show your appreciation and help produce the show!
Here are a few more details about how it works:
Patreon is an amazing new platform many artists and professionals are using to generate financial support from their fans. In short, you can pledge to pay an amount of your choosing per Data Stories episode.
As things stand now, we need $600 per episode, which includes expenses for support staff, and of course any other expenses that arise, such as server space, mics, and promotions. Note that both of us hosts have decided to produce the show pro bono. It’s a labor of love.
On the Data Stories Patreon page, you can pledge between $3-$50 for each episode. We need 200 true fans pledging the minimum amount to reach our goal and go completely ad-free.
If you are a Data Stories fan you can help in two ways. First, pledge an amount now. Patreon makes this very easy. You can always unsubscribe if you are not happy with it. Also, remember: you only pay for content we produce, and we only start charging once the funding goal has been reached!
Second, let your friends know if you decide to back the show! You can retweet announcements from the podcast, share them on Facebook, or send an email to your friends.
It would be wonderful if you could be part of this journey!
