A tool specifically attuned to sentiments expressed in social media.

The Valence Aware Dictionary and sEntiment Reasoner, or VADER, is a lexicon and rule-based sentiment analysis tool for social media content.

The VADER sentiment lexicon is sensitive both the polarity and the intensity of sentiments. In classifying content, it draws upon three established work banks as well as lexical features that are common in social content. For example, the tool can detect that emoticons like smile denote positivity, while :( denotes a negative sentiment. Other sentiment-related acronyms, such as LOL or WTF, and slang, such as meh or nah, are also supported. In total, the tool offers over 7,500 lexical features with validated valence scores.

To test the accuracy of VADER, the researchers behind the project compared it to seven other lexicons. Their results found that VADER performs as well as individual human raters at matching ground truth.
